Mayweather calls for fight with Pacquiao next May

Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he’s ready to fight Manny Pacquiao next May in a long anticipated bout that would be the richest ever in boxing. Mayweather called for negotiations for the fight to be take place, though he warned Pacquiao not to expect to get anywhere near the money that he himself would make. "You lost twice and now you’re coming back begging for the same money?" Mayweather asked. "That’s not gonna happen." In an interview on the Showtime network from a fight card he was promoting in San Antonio, Mayweather for the first time called for the fight to happen and even gave a date — May 2. He claimed it wasn’t him but Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, who has been the main obstacle for not making the fight in the last five years. "Floyd Mayweather is not ducking or dodging any opponent," Mayweather said. "Bob Arum is stopping the fight. We have been trying to make this fight happen for many years behind the scene." Pacquiao turned the pressure up on Mayweather to make the fight last month, saying the time had come to put on the much anticipated bout. Arum said he had also been in talks with CBS Corp. chairman Les Moonves about the fight. CBS operates Showtime, which has Mayweather under contract for two more fights in May and September. Mayweather repeated his old charges about Pacquiao not wanting to do blood tests prior to the fight for it not happening five years ago. He also said he offered Pacquiao $40 million for a bout, but he refused. Mayweather, who hasn’t lost in 47 fights, said he was confident he could beat Pacquiao and eager to star in an extremely lucrative fight. "I know that he’s not on my level," Mayweather said. "The fan would love to see the fight. And, of course, I want to go out with a bang." No one knows how rich a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would be, coming so late after it first should have happened in 2009. There are some who think both fighters have slipped some with advancing age, but there’s no doubt that the fight still holds tremendous appeal. It would likely gross at least $250 million, and Mayweather’s purse alone would be more than $100 million. Mayweather was not asked in the ringside interview about the murder-suicide of rapper Earl Warren Hayes and his wife in Los Angeles on Monday. Police spoke to Mayweather after the killings following media reports that he may have spoken to Hayes before he shot Stephanie Elyse Moseley and then took his own life in their apartment.

Peter Okoye Explains Why He Went Solo

Two weeks ago, Nutricima, makers of Olympic milk endorsed only Peter Okoye instead of the singing duo of him and his brother, Paul, since then tongues have been wagging, anxiety high and of course, speculations running wild with all sorts of permutations on why it should be so. Scandal hounds have sniffed another crack in the house of the Okoyes and felt another rift in the air as the one that nearly tore them apart months before. However, Peter, the more outspoken one of the music twins peaking at his unveiling debunked such development and explained why the company selected him alone. “ Music is like football. For example, if I play for Barcelona and I get endorsed by Nike, it doesn't mean the whole Barcelona team has been endorsed. This is about me and not me and Paul” he explained. “Among thousands or perhaps millions of people in the entertainment industry, I felt honoured to be chosen as the brand ambassador. The deal means a lot, not just to me but also to my fans. If a brand isn't worth it I have nothing to do with such a brand. The fact that I am ready to work with this brand is an indication of its top quality” he added in his inaugural speech as the brand ambassador of the brand

Nigeria at 54: Fitful growth of democratic institutions

As Nigeria celebrates 54th Independence anniversary today, divergent views have continued to greet the country’s achievements in various sectors since October 1, 1960 .While some describe the country as a toddler at 54 others, give kudos to the country’s organs of government for their achievement despite the short time democracy was allowed to thrive in the country. One of the bitter experiences the country went through few years after independence was the civil war. Between 1967 to 1970, the country fought a civil war that almost divided the country. The ability of the military government at that time to successfully prosecute the war without any part of the country seceding has been described as one of the achievements of General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) who was the military Head of State at that time. Nonetheless, the country has been facing numerous socio-economic and political development since then. At present, the protracted battle against terrorism has compounded the general insecurity in the country. Some Nigerians believe that despite apparent drawbacks, the country has not done too badly. Kola Jamodu, President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) believes that despite some challenges facing the country, especially in the area of security, the country is not doing badly in all areas, particularly in communication. He stated that the country has made a significant progress in communication that must be appreciated by all, noting that even the erratic power supply in the country is being looked into by the government.
